Financial expertise for carriers and operators managing high fixed costs and challenging margins

From trucking firms to school bus operators, transportation companies carry enormous fixed-cost exposure in fleet, fuel, and labor. When revenue softens or a key contract is lost, the financial distress compounds rapidly. Lighthouse has served as receiver and financial advisor to transportation businesses, managing operations through shareholder disputes and advising on credit facility restructurings for companies with revenues exceeding $140 million.

CHALLENGES

Transportation distress is driven by fleet economics. Depreciation doesn't stop when revenue does. We bring the financial discipline to evaluate whether the fleet, the routes, and the contracts can support a viable business, and the operational experience to execute whichever path the analysis supports.

proven results

Appointed receiver to maximize recovery for a school transportation company.

Challenge: A school transportation company experiencing financial distress became past due on its obligations during the school year and became in arrears to a secured creditor.

‍The Solve: Lighthouse was appointed as Receiver over the company mid-school year, to maximize the value of operations and maintain asset value to the benefit of creditors.

‍The Outcome: Lighthouse successfully renegotiated contracts with the local school districts to provide value to the company, and subsequently sold and transitioned the assets to a third party who assumed the contracts directly with the respective Districts. There was no interruption in service to the respective school districts. Asset value was protected and maximized and the Creditors experienced a much greater recovery than anticipated.

how we help

How we stabilize transportation businesses.

1. Fleet & Contract Assessment: We evaluate fleet composition, age, utilization, maintenance obligations, and contract terms to determine the true cost structure and identify where value exists and where exposure is concentrated.

2. Cash Flow & Lender Management: We build a real-time cash flow model that accounts for fuel costs, driver payroll, insurance, and equipment financing, then negotiate with lenders based on a realistic picture of the business.

3. Operational Restructuring: We evaluate route profitability, driver productivity, and fleet optimization opportunities to determine whether the business can be restructured around its profitable core.

4. Resolution Execution: We execute the outcome whether it's a refinancing, a sale of the business as a going concern, or a disciplined wind-down that maximizes recovery from fleet assets and contract assignments.
